This is a one day field trip traveling through Bengo Province located
north of Luanda. The main focus will be to visit two oil seeps and also
to examine the contact between basement and the eastern edge of the
Kwanza Basin. The Upper Cretaceous sediments at Barro do Dande will also
be visited.
We will visit the famous Libongos oil seep which was first described by
the Portuguese in the late 1700’s. A smaller but richer oil seep, the
North Caxito seep will also be visited. Both seeps have been quarried
for tar used for road repair. The sediments in which the oil is located
is the U. Cretaceous Binga Formation which in the Congo Basin is
Pinda-equivelent. Both seeps are located very close to PreCambrian
granite basement outcrop, indeed the Libongos seep is within 200 meters
from outcrop. We will also visit the Sudi waterfall, just east of
Caxito, where basement outcrops can be studied in detail.
This field trip thus allows the attendees to study a variety of
sedimentary sections and at the same time travel though the beautiful
province of Bengo. This is also historically a very interesting area,
especially at the time of Angola’s independence in 1975, and some of the
key historical events will be reviewed during the field trip.
The field trip costs include 4 wheel drive cars and drivers, a box lunch
and cold drinks. The field trip is not rigorous, ordinary running shoes
will suffice for visiting the outcrops.
Regarding safety and security, the field trip leader Tako Koning has led
field trips to these outcrops many times for various groups & companies
including Esso and Chevron and there has never been any security
problems or accidents. Nonetheless, the field trip leaders nor the
conference can accept any responsibility for any mishaps or accidents
which could occur in this field trip.
